Welcome to Dragonflies!
School Year 2016 to 2017
Summer Term 2017
Second half term
After a very busy year so far, here we are at the start of the last half term for this academic year. The time has gone so quickly!
We are carrying on with our Italy topic, as the children have responded extremely well to the learning involved and have enjoyed it so much. We have found that there is so much to discover about this area. As well as studying the Roman Empire in the past, we will also broaden our studies to some of modern Italy’s neighbouring European countries and will extend the maps skills we have already developed as part of this topic. Get ready to get those atlases and maps out to support your child’s learning. This will lead us nicely onto Cultural Week, where the children will choose a country from further afield to study.
Spelling quizzes will still take place on a Friday. The lists are below for children to check on their key words they need to learn each week. Please find details of the remaining work for this year on our Parent Plans below. Remember to pop in and see me if you have any questions. My door is always open! Mrs Merrell

Our weekly news
This week we’ve carried on learning about the Romans and have made shields. We cut them out, decorated them and have painted them. Next week, we’re going to march in the playground just like the Romans did! We started to learn about Italy and mountains and how they are formed. In Maths, Year 2 were learning about shapes and Year 3 finished our work on parallel and perpendicular lines. In English, we wrote some sentences about our new book ‘Jack and the Dreamsack’. We like this story because it is funny! Year 3 played tennis at PCSA. We practised footwork with tennis and played lots of games. We also started our new Science projects to answer our big questions like ‘what do plants need to grow?’ and ‘how does a garden grow?’ By Betty and Lillie-Mae 28th April 2017

Creating Roman shields after studying soldiers on Friday 28th
This week we finished off our Roman shields and marched on the field. We had a great time because Year 3 pretended to be Celts and charged at Year 2. Year 2 won, of course! On Friday we started our Roman Auxiliary letter and on Thursday Year 2 had a little practice at a reading quiz from last year. We did brilliantly! In Mathematics, Year 2 did shapes and Year 3 did telling the time to the minute. We have some homework on My Maths about time. Year 3 have been doing lots of their own research on Romans. We are becoming quite expert at this now! by Ralph and Louis 05.05.17

This week we carried on learning about the Romans. We looked at buildings and made a paper bridge with columns and arches. We had to put something on the top and it had to hold it. In English we wrote about finding a hidden door to use expanded noun phrases and suffixes. In Maths we practiced lots of things we need for our SATS and Year 3 were telling digital times. by Lillie-Mae 12.05.17
Next week will be a busy week in Dragonflies. Year 2 will start competing their Year 2 SATS papers. We’ve practised this week and everyone has demonstrated an excellent attitude towards their learning! Well done Year 2, you should be very proud of yourselves. Year 3 have also been brilliant as they’ve been getting on with their work and research while Year 2 have got on with it all! Thank you Year 3. All of Dragonflies are stars. Year 2 homework this weekend is to get lots of rest, have a lot of fun with your family/friends and to focus on being fit and ready for hard work next week! Have a lovely weekend from Mrs Merrell 12.05.17
This week, Year 2 have been very busy with our Maths, reading and spelling quizzes. We’ve also done some writing about a magic door and about instructions to make Roman shields, bridges and chariots. Year 3 have had to do lots of quiet work while we’ve been so busy. They have been so good! Next week, we are looking forward to doing some writing and more topic work! We really enjoyed French this week with Mr Butt. By Oliver W and Isaac 19.05.17
This week we’ve been writing up poems about a lovely sunny day because the weather has been so nice. Year 2 have been practising their handwriting so we show our neatest writing in our work all the time now. Year 3 did a Maths test to show our learning for this half term. We’ve learnt a lot! We did some Art with Mrs Duckett. It was about Kandinsky and we did our own pictures. In Science, we looked at plants and how they disperse seeds (see above photographs). We even made helicopter seeds to see how the wind carried them. We are looking forward to our holiday next week! By The Two Williams! 26.05.17

Spring Term 2017
Spring Term second half
A warm welcome back to everyone after our half term break! Here is our new Topic plan for the rest of the Spring Term. We have now completed our work on the remaining Stone Age to Iron Age periods and have arrived in Britain just before the Romans are due to invade!
We are now moving onto considering why the Romans would come to Britain and what happened when they first got here. This topic will then move onto a European study focus on Italy in the Summer Term, as well as examining the technological, cultural, artistic, social, linguistic, architectural and religious changes the Romans left us as their legacy (also in the Summer Term). So, as you can see, this is the start of a major, long term study. We will be very busy learning!
Our spelling lists are also here. Thank you to everyone who helps their children with their spellings. It makes a real difference to their achievements and I can see these improved spellings in their written work. Well done and keep it up!

We have been busy creating Viking longships to complete our learning on the Anglo Saxons and Viking topic we started last term. Our criteria was that the ships had to be designed with key features of a longship and be able to float! We tested our designs to see if they met the second design criteria. Take a look to see how successful we were.
In Mathematics, we have been using equipment to visualise and practise our addition and subtraction skills. We are becoming quite skilled at adding and subtracting mentally since we have used these techniques in our lessons.
